The Hong Kong City Council first conceived the Hong Kong Science Museum in 1976. In the 80s, the Council began designing and developing the museum. Construction of the building began in March 1988 and was completed in September 1990. The grand opening of the museum took place on April 18, 1991. In January 2000, the Department of Leisure and Cultural Services was established to replace the City Council and the Regional Council for Overseeing the functioning of the Hong Kong Science Museum and all state museums, which launched a new era in the development of Hong Kong museums.

Since its opening, the Hong Kong Science Museum has become an ideal place to study science. Unlike traditional museums, the Science Museum encourages visitors to put their hands, eyes, ears, and minds together as they work with interactive exhibits.

The four-storey museum, located next to the Hong Kong Historical Museum, covers an area of 12,000 square meters. The total total area of the museum is 13,500 square meters, with the permanent exhibition halls alone covering an area of 6,500 square meters. The specially constructed museum building consists of a series of three-dimensional geometric shapes. The main building is a rectangular block decorated with a cone and dome on the roof, and with a semi-cylindrical lecture hall on its side.

The museum has about 500 exhibits with 70 percent of practical items for visitors of all ages. The most notable exhibit in the museum is a 22-meter energy machine, which, when activated, triggers a number of fascinating and spectacular audio and visual effects.

In addition to the permanent exhibits, the museum also regularly hosts temporary themed exhibitions on a variety of scientific topics, complemented by a full range of expansion activities.
