Ap Lei Chau island Hong Kong

Ap Lei Chau island Hong Kong

Ap Lei Chau island Hong Kong 鴨脷洲
It is an island in Hong Kong, part of the Southern District; one of the most densely populated islands in the world (more than 60 thousand people/km2).
It is located in Aberdeen Bay to the southwest of Hong Kong Island, opposite the Aberdeen district.
The island has a shape that has been compared to the shape of a duck’s tongue. Hence the island’s name: in Cantonese, “ap” means duck, “lay” means tongue, and “chau” means island. Other names of the island are Yalichou and Aberdeen Island[4]. The highest elevation on the island is Yukkuaysan Hill. (玉桂山) or Johnston Mountain.

Apleichau is bordered by the waters of Aberdeen Harbor to the north and northwest, Aberdeen District to the north, Shamwan Harbor to the east, and Wonchukhan District to the east. From the south, Apleichau is washed by the waters of the Aberdeen Canal and the East Lamma Canal, and is also connected by a sandy and rocky bridge to the small uninhabited islet of Uplaypai or Yalipai.

Apleichau Park, Hongxing Street Garden, Apleichau Waterfront Promenade and Upleichau Wind Tower Park are located along the northern coast of the island.
The majority of the population lives in the northern part of the island, while the southern part remains less populated due to the hilly terrain and industrial facilities located here.
Uplaichau is connected to Hong Kong by a road bridge, which has four lanes in each direction. There are regular bus routes, minibuses and regular taxis. There is a water connection by ferry and sampan. Two new stations (Lei Tung and South Horizons) are under construction as part of the expansion of the Hong Kong Subway
