Hong Kong. The world’s largest underground railway station
The futuristic train station received passengers with a six-year delay. However, this did not prevent the project from taking 17 architectural and construction awards from the very beginning of its design, since 2002.
What’s so premium about it? It is the largest underground railway station in the world. The final construction cost was 30% more than the initial estimate of 8.6 billion dollars.
The building height is 25 m. There is a garden on the roof and an observation deck overlooking Victoria Harbor. The building smoothly goes underground to a depth of minus 25 m. There, in the dungeon, there are fifteen railway platforms for high-speed trains to Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
The station itself looks like a cave – transparent, with curved white columns.
West Kowloon Station is the new iconic “gateway” of the metropolis. It is the only station in Hong Kong that connects to mainland China through a special tunnel.
West Kowloon Station is part of the new West Kowloon Cultural District, which is being built on alluvial land.
Seven pedestrian bridges and two underpasses were built to access the station. There is a hotel and a bus station nearby.
The author of the project is architect Andrew Bromberg from the British architectural firm Aedas.
The station is designed as an airport – the arrival and departure zones are separated.
There are 4 levels underground. Natural light penetrates even to the underground levels.
