Space Museum Hongkong 香港太空館
It’s also called the Hong Kong Planetarium.
The Hong Kong Space Museum began construction in 1977.
The main architect of the project was Mr. Joseph Min Gun Lee from the Department of Public Works.
The Hong Kong Space Museum was commissioned in October 1980.
This is the first local planetarium to promote astronomy and space science.
The unique egg-shaped dome makes the 8000 square meter museum one of the most famous attractions in Hong Kong.
The museum consists of two wings – east and west. The first one, the core of the planetarium, has an egg-shaped dome structure. Below it are the Stanley Ho Space Theater, the Space Science Hall, the OMNIMAX projection room, workshops and offices. The west wing houses the Astronomy Hall, a lecture hall, a gift shop, a Resource Center, and offices.
Inside the Stanley Ho Space Theater is a hemispherical projection dome with a diameter of 23 meters. With the first OMNIMAX movie projector in the eastern hemisphere, the museum is also the first planetarium in the world to have a fully automatic control system in its Stanley Ho Space Theater. Every year, the museum produces a Sky Show, which will be displayed using the planetarium’s digital projection system, and presents the best foreign OMNIMAX films and the Dome 3D show in Hong Kong.
The museum has two themed exhibition halls: the Space Hall and the Space Exploration Hall on the first and second floors, respectively. The exhibits, mostly interactive, allow visitors to learn through a series of entertainment and educational activities.
Each year, the museum organizes many expansion events, including an astronomical carnival, astronomical Happy Hours, fun science lab classes, astronomical competitions, lectures and astronomical film screenings, etc. You can also find a lot of information related to stargazing, basic astronomy, astronomical news, and educational resources on the museum’s homepage.
